The BPX8093 PCI Express Backplane

This PCI Express backplane features six x8 PCI Express 3.0 electrical interface links if paired with a dual-processor BXT7059 single board computer and outfitted with an optional PEX10 & IOB33 PCIe link expansion option cards.  This backplane and SBC combination enables system designers to support multiple high-end video or GPU cards within a single rackmount computer. Three additional x4 PCIe Gen3 I/O card slots are available on this BPG8093 PCIe backplane.  One x4 PCIe 2.0 slot is also available resulting in a total of 10 PCI Express I/O card slots on the backplane.  Additional PCI Express link expansion slots are included to support the PEX10 and IOB33 option cards installed on the single board computer.

PCIe links integrated into the CPUs on the BXT7059 SBC automatically match an option card’s PCI Express link type and speed via the interface’s built-in auto-training capability.  This SBC and backplane design feature maximizes system flexibility by enabling system support for standard PCI Express 3.0, 2.0 or 1.1 option cards having various PCIe electrical interfaces such as x16, x8, x4 and x1 PCIe links.

14-slot form factor supports one combo or server-class, PICMG 1.3 SBC and up to ten PCI Express option cards.  All card slots use x16 PCIe mechanical connectors and six of these slots are driven with PCI Express 3.0 electrical interfaces from a Trenton BXT7059 single board computer.


Board dimensions: 12.3” x 12.9” with a minimum drive tower cut-out of 14.53 square inches

The nominal backplane thickness is 0.080”; however, the backplane mounting holes are recessed 0.018” on the bottom to provide an effective PCB thickness of 0.062” for use in the chassis design process.


Server:  Six x8 and three x4 PCIe 3.0 electrical interfaces plus one x4 PCIe 2.0 interface, with all card slots featuring x16 mechanical connectors

Note 1:  Optional IOB33 module required to provide a x4 PCIe 3.0 electrical link to backplane slot PCIe4 from a BXT7059 SBC.  The PCIe link width and interface type is determined by the specific single board computer used with the backplane.

Note 2:  Optional PEX10 module required to provide two x8 PCIe 3.0 electrical links to backplane slots PCIe1 and PCIe3 from a BXT7059 dual-processor SBC.

Note 3:  Backplane slot PCIe2 operates as PCIe 2.0/1.1 slot.

Note 4:  PCI Express link training is fully supported on the BPX8093 backplane.  This allows any PCIe to function in any backplane slot.  PCI Express 3.0 link speeds are possible in all backplane slots except PCIe2.

PCIe 3.0 link status LEDs 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 provide a visual check on the operational speed of the backplane’s critical PCIe links.

LED10 – PCIe link speed from SBC to PCIe 3.0 switch
LED11 – PCIe link speed to card slot PCIe7
LED12 – PCIe link speed to card slot PCIe8
LED13 – PCIe link speed to card slot PCIe9
LED14 – PCIe link speed to card slot PCIe10
